GWF-28 – Infantry Captain
An infantry captain on the Western Front occupied a difficult position between senior command and the soldiers actually carrying out an operation.
GWF-28 – Infantry Captain provides the French forces with an identifiable company-level command figure.
A captain might be responsible for organising men across several platoons, ensuring orders were understood, coordinating with neighbouring units and attempting to maintain control once an attack had begun. Telephone lines could be cut and runners delayed, meaning decisions often had to be made with incomplete information.
The officer therefore works well at the centre of a larger French formation. Position him with walking infantry before an attack, among supporting weapons or closer to the front as he directs troops across the battlefield.
Adding command figures at different points within a large display also helps transform groups of individual soldiers into something resembling an organised military unit.
Available through The Military Workshop – a commanding John Jenkins Designs French Infantry Captain representing the officers responsible for leading the poilus through the battles of the Great War.
