GWF-33 – Gendarme
The French Gendarmerie had responsibilities that extended far beyond ordinary civilian policing during the First World War.
GWF-33 – Gendarme brings one of these distinctive figures into the French Great War collection.
Behind the fighting front, military authorities had to control enormous movements of men, vehicles, prisoners and supplies. Roads became heavily congested, military zones had to be regulated and order maintained across an area transformed by the presence of millions of soldiers.
A gendarme is therefore particularly effective in a rear-area scene. Position him beside a road controlling traffic, near a checkpoint, with prisoners or around a busy supply point.
Combined with Berliet trucks, walking troops and other transport figures, GWF-33 can help create a French scene that extends well beyond the firing trench.
