GWF-42 – French Soup Men
War may be dominated by accounts of battles, but soldiers still had to be fed every day.
GWF-42 – French Soup Men explores this essential and much more ordinary side of life in the French Army.
Hot food could make an enormous difference to men living for extended periods in cold, wet and uncomfortable conditions. Meals were prepared behind the immediate fighting line and somehow had to reach troops occupying forward positions.
The figures make a wonderful change from firing infantry and artillery crews. Position them near a field kitchen, beside resting soldiers or moving along a communication route carrying food towards the trenches.
A small scene built around food distribution can become one of the most characterful areas of a large diorama because it shows soldiers temporarily removed from the act of fighting.
Available through The Military Workshop – a wonderfully different John Jenkins Designs set portraying the everyday business of feeding the French poilus of the Great War.
