HMRR-07R – Hastatus – Red Shield
HMRR-07R portrays a single Hastatus with red shield, adding another individual pose to the Roman heavy infantry line.
The word Hastatus refers to an individual member of the Hastati, the troops traditionally deployed in the first major line of the Mid-Republican legion.
These soldiers operated within the manipular system, in which the legion was divided into smaller tactical units rather than functioning as one enormous unbroken formation. This arrangement offered useful flexibility on difficult ground and allowed successive bodies of infantry to support one another.
For the collector, HMRR-07R can be placed among the larger red-shield sets to introduce a different stance and break up the regularity of the ranks.
A few individual Hastati positioned slightly ahead of the main body can also suggest that the formation is beginning to move into action rather than standing on parade.
