IWA-10 – Boeing F4B-4 A-9021

With its open cockpit, radial engine and compact biplane configuration, the Boeing F4B-4 captures the appearance of U.S. naval aviation during one of its most colourful periods.

Introduced during the early 1930s, the F4B represented an important generation of carrier fighters used by the United States Navy and Marine Corps before the transition to the more powerful monoplanes that would dominate the Second World War.

IWA-10 recreates the Boeing F4B-4 A-9021, offering collectors a classic example of the inter-war naval fighter. The type combined traditional biplane construction with the increasingly sophisticated engineering being developed for carrier operations.

Carrier aviation itself was still evolving rapidly. Pilots had to master take-offs and landings from relatively small flight decks while navies experimented with the tactics and organisation that would eventually make the aircraft carrier one of the dominant weapons of the Pacific War.

The F4B-4's bright pre-war markings make it particularly attractive as a display model. Position it on a carrier deck with appropriate personnel or create a shore-based naval air station filled with pilots, mechanics and equipment.

Available through The Military Workshop – an eye-catching John Jenkins Designs Boeing F4B-4 representing the colourful and pioneering world of U.S. naval aviation during the 1930s.
