Red Jacket, known in Seneca as Sagoyewatha, was one of the most prominent Seneca leaders and orators of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His life spanned a period of enormous upheaval for the Haudenosaunee, as war, American expansion and changing relationships with European and American governments placed increasing pressure upon Indigenous nations.
Born around 1750, Red Jacket became particularly famous not as a battlefield commander but for his abilities as a speaker, diplomat and defender of Seneca interests. His English name is traditionally associated with a red military-style coat presented to him by the British.
