M-WIN-20 – Highlander Advancing with Musket
The struggle for power in India brought British and Indian armies into repeated conflict during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with Highland regiments among the British forces that campaigned across the subcontinent.
M-WIN-20 – Highlander Advancing with Musket captures one of these soldiers moving forward with his principal infantry weapon.
Campaigning in India placed European troops in an unfamiliar environment. Heat, disease, long marches and difficult supply arrangements could prove as serious a threat as the opposing army.
On the battlefield, however, British infantry relied heavily upon discipline, formation and controlled musketry. An advancing Highlander is therefore useful for showing the stage before the firing line is established.
Place M-WIN-20 alongside other Highland infantry in several irregular ranks, with officers and musicians helping maintain the formation.
The figure also creates an excellent visual contrast with Maratha cavalry and locally raised troops, emphasising the very different military traditions brought together during the wars in India.
