MAC-20 – General Parmenion – Thessalian Cavalry
Alexander the Great dominates popular accounts of the Macedonian conquest of Persia, but his victories were also built upon the experience and ability of other senior commanders. Among the most important was Parmenion.
A veteran commander who had already served Philip II, Parmenion was one of the most senior officers in Alexander's army when the invasion of the Persian Empire began in 334 BC.
At several of Alexander's major battles, Parmenion commanded the left wing, where the excellent Thessalian cavalry frequently played an important role. While Alexander and the Companion cavalry are often remembered for spectacular offensive action on the right, Parmenion's wing could face the difficult task of containing enemy attacks and maintaining the integrity of the Macedonian line.
MAC-20 – General Parmenion, Thessalian Cavalry therefore provides an important personality for collectors wanting to represent the command structure of Alexander's army rather than concentrating entirely upon Alexander himself.
At Gaugamela in 331 BC, Parmenion commanded the Macedonian left during the decisive confrontation with Darius III. The pressure on this part of the battlefield was considerable while Alexander sought the opportunity for his famous attack elsewhere.
Displayed with Thessalian cavalry, MAC-20 creates an excellent command group on the left flank of a Macedonian army, balancing Alexander and his Companions on the opposite wing.
