MAD-01 – Madras Sepoy

Under its alternate supplied title, MAD-01 represents a Madras Sepoy – an Indian soldier serving within the military establishment of the Madras Presidency.

The presidency armies of the East India Company were fundamental to the expansion of British power in India. The Madras Army, like its Bengal and Bombay counterparts, contained large numbers of Indian soldiers commanded within an increasingly formal military structure.

Sepoys served in numerous campaigns against Indian and European opponents. Their service was not peripheral to British expansion; Indian troops made up the great majority of many East India Company field forces.

MAD-01 – Madras Sepoy gives collectors the rank-and-file perspective of these Anglo-Indian campaigns. The figure can be combined with Madras officers and other infantry poses to build a complete Company formation.

This is an especially useful subject for a collection because it moves the focus away from exclusively European soldiers and towards the Indian troops upon whom Company military power depended so heavily.

Available from The Military Workshop – a finely detailed John Jenkins Designs Madras Sepoy representing the Indian infantry at the heart of East India Company warfare.
