Few characters are more closely associated with Richard Sharpe than the formidable Irish rifleman Patrick Harper.
NA563 – ‘Sharpe's Rifles Sergeant Patrick Harper’ portrays the fictional soldier who becomes Sharpe's trusted friend and senior enlisted companion throughout the series.
Harper's appeal comes partly from the strong partnership at the centre of the Sharpe stories, but his rank also gives him a useful place within a miniature formation. A sergeant was essential to the everyday functioning of an infantry unit, helping maintain discipline and translating officers' orders into action among the men.
Within the fictional rifle company, Harper can therefore sit naturally between Sharpe and the chosen men such as Harris and Hagman.
For display, the Sharpe figures work particularly well in the broken terrain of the Peninsular War – a ruined wall, rocky hillside, woodland edge or Spanish village provides a much more appropriate setting than a rigid parade ground.
