A Praetorian launching a pilum depicts an elite soldier of the Praetorian Guard performing one of the classic Roman infantry attacks: the opening javelin strike before close combat.
In practice, the action looked like this:
- The soldier grips the pilum (a heavy Roman throwing spear) near the rear of the shaft
- He steps forward from behind his scutum shield, using body momentum for power
- The pilum is thrown in a high-force overhand motion toward enemy formations
- On impact, the long iron shank often bends, making it difficult for enemies to throw it back
This tactic was designed to:
- Disrupt enemy shield walls
- Injure or force opponents to drop shields
- Create openings for a disciplined advance into melee combat
Even though Praetorians are best known as imperial bodyguards in Rome, they were still trained as heavy infantry and could deploy standard Roman battlefield tactics when required.
