King George V was the monarch of the United Kingdom and the British Empire from 1910 until his death in 1936. He reigned during one of the most turbulent periods in modern history, including the entirety of the World War I, which reshaped Europe and the global imperial system.
Born in 1865 as the second son of the future King Edward VII, George V originally pursued a career in the Royal Navy before becoming heir to the throne after the death of his elder brother. His naval background influenced his disciplined, practical approach to monarchy.
During World War I, George V played a significant symbolic role as a unifying figure for Britain and its empire. In 1917, amid rising anti-German sentiment, he changed the royal house name from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the more British-sounding House of Windsor, reinforcing national identity during wartime.
His reign saw major political and social changes, including the expansion of democratic governance, the decline of aristocratic political dominance, and the gradual transformation of the British Empire into a more autonomous Commonwealth structure. He also witnessed the rise of Irish independence movements and the eventual partition of Ireland.
George V was known for his reserved personality, sense of duty, and emphasis on constitutional monarchy. Unlike earlier monarchs with more direct political influence, his role was largely ceremonial, focused on stability and continuity during periods of upheaval.
In international affairs, he maintained relationships with Allied leaders during and after World War I, supporting the British war effort and later encouraging postwar recovery and imperial cohesion.
By the time of his death in 1936, the world had entered a new era marked by economic instability and the rise of new political tensions that would later lead to World War II.
