German Infantryman Advancing, 1916-18

This detailed miniature depicts a German infantryman advancing on the Western Front during the later years of the First World War, from 1916 to 1918. It represents the ordinary frontline soldier of the Imperial German Army, fighting through some of the most intense and demanding battles of the conflict.

By this stage of the war, the Western Front had become dominated by trench systems, artillery bombardments, machine guns, and defensive obstacles. German infantrymen were required to endure harsh conditions while taking part in major battles including the Battle of Verdun (1916), the Third Battle of Ypres (1917), and the great offensives of 1918.

The figure reflects the changing appearance of the German soldier during this period, including the introduction of the M1916 Stahlhelm (steel helmet), which replaced the earlier Pickelhaube and provided improved protection against artillery fragments. Infantry equipment was adapted for the realities of trench warfare, with soldiers carrying ammunition pouches, field gear, entrenching tools, and the reliable Karabiner 98k/98AZ rifle family.

Unlike the specially trained Sturmtruppen, regular German infantry remained the backbone of the Imperial Army, holding defensive positions, launching attacks, and enduring the exhausting conditions of industrialised warfare.
