"The Devil's Paint Brush" German Infantryman Team with MG08, 1916-18
This striking miniature set depicts a German infantry machine-gun team operating the legendary MG08 Maxim machine gun during the later years of the First World War. The title “The Devil’s Paint Brush” refers to the terrifying nickname given to the machine gun by Allied soldiers because of the way it swept the battlefield with devastating streams of fire.
The MG08, the German adaptation of the famous Maxim machine gun, was one of the most feared weapons of the Great War. Capable of sustained automatic fire when properly supplied with ammunition and cooling water, it became the backbone of German defensive tactics on the Western Front. Positioned in fortified trenches, bunkers, and strongpoints, MG08 crews were responsible for defending key sectors and breaking up enemy attacks.
From 1916 to 1918, German infantry warfare increasingly relied on carefully positioned machine guns supported by riflemen and artillery. During major battles such as the Battle of Verdun (1916) and later defensive actions against Allied offensives, MG08 teams played a crucial role in slowing and stopping mass infantry assaults.
Operating the MG08 was demanding work. A crew of several soldiers was required to carry the heavy weapon, ammunition belts, spare parts, and water supplies for the cooling jacket. The gunner and his assistants worked together under intense battlefield conditions, often becoming priority targets for enemy artillery and counter-fire.
