German Sturmtruppen Advancing, No.2, 1916-18
This finely detailed miniature depicts a German Sturmtruppen (Stormtrooper) soldier advancing during the First World War, representing the elite assault infantry that emerged as one of the most innovative developments in trench warfare between 1916 and 1918.
By 1916, the German Army faced the challenge of breaking through heavily fortified Allied trench systems. Traditional infantry assaults often resulted in devastating casualties, leading to the development of specially trained Sturmtruppen units. These soldiers were selected for their physical fitness, initiative, and ability to operate independently in small groups.
Unlike ordinary infantry formations, Sturmtruppen relied on infiltration tactics — advancing rapidly through weak points in enemy defences, bypassing strongpoints, and attacking command posts, artillery positions, and supply lines behind the front. Their purpose was not simply to capture trenches but to disrupt the entire enemy defensive system.
The figure represents the appearance of these assault troops during the later war years, equipped for fast-moving close combat. Typical equipment included the M1916 Stahlhelm, ammunition pouches, grenades, trench tools, and weapons such as the Karabiner 98AZ carbine, pistols, and other close-assault weapons.
Sturmtruppen played a major role in battles including the German offensives of 1918, where their methods influenced the development of modern infantry tactics. Although Germany ultimately failed to achieve victory, these elite units demonstrated a new style of warfare based on mobility, surprise, and concentrated firepower.
