This dynamic miniature depicts a Zulu warrior engaged in close combat, wielding an axe, representing the fierce fighting style and traditional weaponry of the Zulu Kingdom during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
While the iconic iklwa stabbing spear and hide shield are most commonly associated with Zulu warriors, axes and other traditional weapons were also used by some warriors, particularly for close fighting and as supplementary weapons. Zulu soldiers were highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, relying on strength, discipline, and aggressive tactics when engaging enemy forces.
During the Anglo-Zulu War, the Zulu army was organised into disciplined regiments known as amabutho, with warriors trained from a young age in endurance, formation manoeuvres, and close-quarter fighting. Their battlefield tactics were famously based on the “horns of the buffalo” formation, designed to pin the enemy in place while encircling them from the flanks.
The year 1879 saw some of the most dramatic battles of the colonial era, including the stunning Zulu victory at the Battle of Isandlwana, where the Zulu army defeated a larger British force. Despite their eventual defeat at the Battle of Ulundi, the courage and fighting ability of the Zulu warriors became legendary.
