This striking miniature depicts a Zulu warrior charging into battle with his traditional spear (iklwa), representing the fierce close-quarter combat style of the Zulu Kingdom during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.

The Zulu warrior’s primary weapon was the famous iklwa, a short stabbing spear introduced during the military reforms of King Shaka Zulu in the early 19th century. Unlike the longer throwing spears used by earlier generations, the iklwa was designed for close combat, encouraging warriors to engage the enemy at close range with powerful stabbing attacks. Combined with the large hide shield (isihlangu), it became the defining equipment of the Zulu soldier.

Zulu armies were organised into regiments known as amabutho, made up of highly disciplined warriors trained in endurance, formation fighting, and aggressive battlefield tactics. Their famous “horns of the buffalo” formation relied on speed and coordination — the main force would engage the enemy while flanking units moved around the sides to encircle and overwhelm their opponents.

During the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, these tactics achieved one of the most remarkable victories in colonial military history at the Battle of Isandlwana, where the Zulu army defeated a large British force. Although ultimately defeated at the Battle of Ulundi, Zulu warriors earned lasting recognition for their bravery, discipline, and fighting skill.
