This poignant miniature depicts a fallen Zulu warrior, representing the human cost and brutality of the battles fought during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
The Zulu warriors who fought during this conflict were members of highly organised regiments known as amabutho, trained in discipline, endurance, and close-quarter combat. Armed with the traditional iklwa stabbing spear and hide shield, they formed the core of the Zulu Kingdom’s military strength and became renowned for their courage and determination on the battlefield.
The figure reflects the devastating clashes between the Zulu Kingdom and the British Empire, where traditional warrior tactics met the technology of a modern imperial army. Battles such as the Battle of Isandlwana (22 January 1879) demonstrated the strength of the Zulu military, as thousands of Zulu warriors overwhelmed a British force in one of the most significant defeats suffered by the British Army during the colonial era.
The conflict was marked by extraordinary acts of bravery on both sides, but also by heavy casualties as warriors fought at close range with spear and shield against rifles, artillery, and disciplined infantry formations.
