Katherine of Aragon

Katherine of Aragon was Henry VIII's first wife and Queen of England for more than 20 years. Daughter of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, she was originally married to Henry's elder brother, Arthur, before marrying Henry after Arthur's death. Their inability to produce a surviving male heir led Henry to seek an annulment—an action refused by the Pope. This dispute ultimately triggered the English Reformation and the creation of the Church of England. Katherine remained steadfast in maintaining that she was Henry's only lawful wife until her death in 1536.

Anne of Cleves

Anne of Cleves became Henry's fourth wife in 1540 as part of a political alliance with the German Duchy of Cleves. Although their marriage was never consummated, Anne wisely accepted an amicable annulment after only six months. In return, Henry granted her generous estates, wealth, and the honorary title of "The King's Beloved Sister." She lived comfortably in England for many years and outlived Henry, becoming one of the few of his wives to enjoy a long and secure life.

Together, Katherine of Aragon and Anne of Cleves represent two very different chapters of Henry VIII's reign. Katherine's marriage reshaped the religious and political landscape of England, while Anne's pragmatic acceptance of annulment ensured her safety and independence. Along with the figures of Catherine Howard, Catherine Parr, Mary, Queen of Scots, and Queen Elizabeth I, they help tell the fascinating story of the Tudor dynasty and the extraordinary women who shaped it.
