GMPT-08A - Retainer with Standard | John Jenkins Designs

This Retainer with Standard represents a member of the Taira Clan during the Gempei War of 1180–1185, the great civil conflict between the Taira and Minamoto families in medieval Japan.

The figure forms part of the Gempei War collection, depicting the soldiers and retainers who served the rival clans during the closing years of the Heian period.

The Taira were among the most powerful aristocratic families of the period, exercising considerable influence over the Imperial Court and the young Emperor Antoku.

During the Gempei War, banners and standards played an important role in identifying opposing forces on the battlefield.

The Taira were traditionally associated with red banners, while their Minamoto rivals carried white standards.

These distinctive colours helped distinguish the competing armies and became powerful symbols of their allegiance.

The Taira Clan was also associated with a stylised black butterfly emblem, which appeared among its heraldic symbols.

This standard bearer provides an excellent addition to a Taira military formation, particularly when displayed alongside mounted samurai, warriors and other retainers from the Gempei War collection.

Now available from The Military Workshop.
