CTSM-03B – Samnite Warrior | John Jenkins Designs

During the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, the Samnites represented one of the greatest military challenges faced by the expanding Roman Republic.

The Samnite peoples inhabited the rugged mountainous regions of central and southern Italy, where their familiarity with difficult terrain provided an important military advantage.

The series of conflicts known as the Samnite Wars had a significant influence upon the development of Roman military tactics.

According to the historical background provided by John Jenkins Designs, the Samnites employed a flexible infantry formation better suited to mountain warfare than the more rigid Greek-style phalanx.

Their military equipment included javelins and short spears, together with round and oval shields. Many warriors also wore the distinctive Italian triple-disc cuirass, constructed from bronze plates.

Unlike the uniform appearance associated with some later armies, Samnite soldiers frequently wore brightly coloured and individually decorated tunics.

CTSM-03B – Samnite Warrior by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Samnite infantryman wearing a distinctive yellow tunic.

The warrior carries a shield and holds his spear raised above his shoulder, prepared to throw or thrust the weapon against an approaching enemy.

This figure complements CTSM-03A and the larger CTSM-03N four-figure set, allowing collectors to create a formation of warriors in different clothing colours.
