GMP-22TA – Taira Retainer | John Jenkins Designs
The Gempei War marked the culmination of the rivalry between the powerful Taira and Minamoto clans during the late Heian period of Japan.
Both families traced their ancestry to the imperial line, although their political and military traditions differed.
John Jenkins Designs explains that while the mounted samurai elite wore elaborate yoroi armour, less wealthy warriors and retainers often used simpler do-maru protection.
These retainers accompanied their leaders and formed an important element of the military forces of the period.
GMP-22TA – Taira Retainer by John Jenkins Designs depicts a warrior serving the Taira Clan.
The figure wears black armour and a helmet, with purple clothing, and carries a naginata held forward.
This miniature complements the other Taira retainers and mounted samurai in the John Jenkins Designs Gempei War collection.
