MGMP-01B – Warrior Monk | John Jenkins Designs

During the Gempei War of 1180–1185, the powerful Buddhist monasteries of Japan became involved in the struggle between the Taira and Minamoto clans.

Their warrior monks, known as Sohei, formed an independent military force whose loyalties could vary throughout the conflict.

John Jenkins Designs describes how the Sohei played an important role during the opening stages of the war, including the Battle of Uji Bridge in 1180.

The monks commonly wore basic armour beneath their traditional robes, while the naginata became one of their most recognisable weapons.

MGMP-01B – Warrior Monk portrays a Japanese warrior monk wearing yellow robes and armed with a naginata.

This individual variation complements MGMP-01A and MGMP-01C, allowing collectors to assemble a group of warrior monks with contrasting robe colours.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs Gempei War collection.
