MGMP-03A – Warrior Monk with Yumi | John Jenkins Designs
The Japanese longbow, known as the yumi, was one of the most important weapons used during the Gempei War of 1180–1185.
John Jenkins Designs explains that archery was highly regarded among the samurai of this period, particularly the elite mounted warriors.
The war also involved the Sohei, or warrior monks, whose religious communities sometimes supported the Taira and sometimes fought alongside the Minamoto.
These monks formed an important part of the military forces engaged during the early stages of the conflict.
MGMP-03A – Warrior Monk with Yumi depicts a Japanese warrior monk wearing yellow robes and carrying a distinctive black yumi bow.
The figure represents a bow-armed member of the Sohei, providing an alternative to the sword-armed and naginata-armed warriors in the collection.
An excellent addition to a Gempei War display featuring Japanese warrior monks.
