ROMCAV-10B – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry, Green Shield | John Jenkins Designs
The Roman military system depended upon a combination of heavily armed legionaries and specialist auxiliary troops who performed duties that the infantry could not easily undertake.
Among the most valuable of these troops were the auxiliary cavalrymen. Recruited from across the Roman world, these mounted soldiers were responsible for reconnaissance, patrolling, protecting the army's flanks and pursuing defeated enemies.
Cavalry formations were known as alae and were divided into smaller units called turmae. These units were commanded by experienced officers known as decurions.
Roman cavalrymen were typically equipped with mail armour, long swords, spears and javelins. Their relatively lightweight shields provided protection while allowing them to manoeuvre effectively on horseback.
ROMCAV-10B – Roman Auxiliary Cavalry by John Jenkins Designs represents one of these mounted warriors carrying a green shield.
Part of the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome collection, this figure offers collectors the opportunity to recreate the mounted forces that played such an important role in Rome's military campaigns.
