AP-36L

This four-piece miniature set depicts Persian Kardake Infantry, representing the skilled and adaptable soldiers who served within the armies of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, one of the greatest empires of the ancient world.

The Achaemenid Empire stretched from Egypt and Anatolia to Central Asia and the Indus Valley, creating a vast multicultural military force composed of warriors from many different nations. Persian armies relied on a combination of infantry, cavalry, archers, and specialised troops to maintain control over their enormous territories.

The Kardakes were a distinctive infantry type within the later Persian military system. While historical sources provide limited information about their exact organisation, they are generally considered to have been trained infantry who combined Persian traditions with influences from the Greek world. Their equipment and battlefield role suggest they were versatile troops capable of supporting larger Persian formations.

Kardake warriors were commonly associated with weapons such as spears, javelins, swords, bows, and shields, allowing them to fight in a variety of roles. Their flexibility made them valuable in the changing style of warfare during the conflicts between the Persian Empire, Greek city-states, and the rising power of Macedonia.

These warriors would have formed part of the armies that faced the expansion of Alexander the Great, fighting in the final struggles between the Achaemenid Empire and Macedon, including the decisive campaigns of Issus (333 BC) and Gaugamela (331 BC).
