PMRR-03R
This two-piece miniature set represents a Princeps of the Mid Republican Roman Army, one of the experienced heavy infantrymen who formed the essential second line of the Roman manipular legion.
The Principes were among the most dependable soldiers of the Roman Republic during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. In the manipular system, the legion was arranged in three principal lines: the Hastati, the Principes, and the Triarii. The Principes stood behind the younger Hastati and were committed when the initial fighting became severe, providing a stronger and more experienced fighting force.
Unlike the earlier Hastati, the Principes were typically veterans with greater battlefield experience and financial standing, allowing them to carry better equipment. They fought as heavily armed infantry, using the famous scutum shield, gladius sword, and pilum throwing spear. Their armour often included chainmail (lorica hamata) and a protective helmet.
The flexibility of the manipular formation gave Roman armies a major advantage, allowing individual units to manoeuvre and maintain pressure against a wide range of enemies. The Principes fought in many of Rome’s most important campaigns, including conflicts against Carthage during the Punic Wars and the powerful armies of the Hellenistic world.
