GGNNH-05
This two-piece miniature set depicts members of the Natal Native Horse (NNH) during the Battle of Gingindlovu, fought on 2 April 1879 as part of the British effort to relieve the besieged garrison at Eshowe during the Anglo-Zulu War.
The Natal Native Horse was a mounted colonial unit formed in Natal and composed largely of African soldiers serving under British officers. Known for their skill as scouts, trackers, and mounted infantry, they provided valuable reconnaissance, screening, and rapid-response capabilities for British columns operating in the difficult terrain of Zululand.
Following the disaster at the Battle of Isandlwana in January 1879, a British force under Lord Chelmsford was organised to rescue the isolated garrison at Eshowe. The relief column advanced into Zululand and encountered a large Zulu force near Gingindlovu. The resulting battle saw the British form a defensive square and withstand repeated Zulu attacks before counter-attacking and securing victory.
The Natal Native Horse played an important supporting role during the campaign, using their mobility to patrol the battlefield, protect the column’s movements, and pursue retreating enemy forces. Their knowledge of local terrain and tracking abilities made them highly effective in frontier warfare.
