GG60-08
This two-piece miniature set depicts infantrymen of the 3rd Battalion, 60th King’s Royal Rifle Corps during the Battle of Gingindlovu, fought on 2 April 1879 during the British campaign to relieve the isolated garrison at Eshowe in Zululand.
The 60th King’s Royal Rifle Corps, also known as the Royal Americans, was one of the British Army’s most respected rifle regiments. Distinguished by their dark green uniforms, the regiment specialised in accurate rifle fire, skirmishing, and flexible battlefield tactics. Their training and discipline made them particularly valuable during colonial campaigns where mobility and marksmanship were essential.
Following the devastating British defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January 1879, British forces launched a relief operation under Lord Chelmsford to rescue the troops trapped at Eshowe Mission Station. The resulting Eshowe Relief Column advanced into Zululand and fought a major engagement against a large Zulu force at Gingindlovu.
During the battle, British troops formed a defensive position protected by wagons and prepared for the Zulu assault. Armed with the Martini-Henry rifle, the men of the 60th King’s Royal Rifle Corps delivered disciplined volleys that helped repel repeated attacks by the Zulu regiments. Their accurate firepower proved decisive in breaking the assault.
