AP-36YBN

This eight-piece miniature set depicts Persian Kardake Infantry, showcasing the soldiers who formed part of the diverse and powerful armies of the Achaemenid Persian Empire during its conflicts with the Greek world and the rising Macedonian kingdom.

The Kardakes were a specialised infantry type of the later Achaemenid military. Although ancient sources provide limited details about their exact organisation, they are generally regarded as trained Persian infantry who incorporated elements of both traditional Persian warfare and Greek-influenced fighting methods.

The Achaemenid Empire maintained one of the largest and most diverse armies of the ancient world. Soldiers were drawn from across the empire’s many regions, creating a force that included Persian nobles, Median troops, Egyptian soldiers, Anatolian contingents, Greek mercenaries, cavalry units, and specialised infantry formations such as the Kardakes.

Kardake infantry were equipped for flexible battlefield roles, carrying weapons such as spears, javelins, swords, bows, and shields. Their ability to fight alongside other Persian units made them valuable within the combined-arms armies of the Achaemenid kings.

These warriors belonged to the era of the great clashes between Persia and the Greek states, and later the campaigns of Alexander the Great, whose Macedonian army ultimately defeated the Achaemenid Empire at battles including Issus (333 BC) and Gaugamela (331 BC).
