ALB-03M - East Kent "The Buffs" Drummer | John Jenkins Designs
This Drummer of the 1/3rd Regiment of Foot represents the East Kent Regiment, known as "The Buffs", during the Battle of Albuera on 16 May 1811.
The figure forms part of the "A Storm of Lancers" collection, commemorating the devastating cavalry attack experienced by Colborne's British Brigade during the Peninsular War.
The Buffs had served in the Peninsula since 1808 and had already participated in significant fighting at Oporto and Talavera.
During the Battle of Albuera, the regiment was caught in a particularly vulnerable position when heavy rain and hail suddenly swept across the battlefield.
The storm obscured the approaching enemy cavalry and made it almost impossible for infantrymen to reload and fire their muskets.
Polish Lancers and French Hussars struck the exposed British formations, causing enormous casualties before the soldiers could reorganise their defensive positions.
The Buffs suffered more than 85 per cent casualties, making them one of the hardest-hit units of the battle.
This individual drummer represents position #12 on the manufacturer's Albuera display base and complements the other East Kent infantry figures portraying the engagement.
Now available from The Military Workshop.
