ALB-09M - French Lancer | John Jenkins Designs
This French Lancer represents the 1er Chevau-Légers Lanciers de la Légion de la Vistule during the Battle of Albuera, fought on 16 May 1811 during the Peninsular War.
The release forms part of the "A Storm of Lancers" series, which recreates the dramatic cavalry assault against Colborne's British Brigade.
As the battle developed, British infantry were preparing to advance after initially repelling a French attack. Suddenly, torrential rain and hail swept across the battlefield, obscuring visibility and making their flintlock muskets almost impossible to use.
The Polish Lancers and French 2nd Hussars, numbering approximately 800 cavalrymen, exploited the confusion and attacked the exposed British flank.
Unable to form defensive squares in time, the infantry suffered devastating losses, particularly the 1/3rd Regiment of Foot, known as the Buffs.
The lancers' long weapons proved especially effective against infantry caught in this vulnerable position, contributing to one of the most destructive cavalry attacks of the campaign.
This release represents position #20 on the manufacturer's Albuera display base and complements the other cavalry and infantry figures depicting the battle.
