ALB-12M – East Kent “The Buffs” | John Jenkins Designs
The Battle of Albuera on 16 May 1811 became one of the bloodiest actions of the Peninsular War, and few British units suffered more severely than the 1st Battalion, 3rd Regiment of Foot – the East Kent Regiment, better known as “The Buffs.”
During a violent rain and hailstorm, elements of Colborne’s brigade were caught in line when Polish lancers and French hussars suddenly appeared through the restricted visibility and struck their exposed flank. Infantry normally relied upon forming square to resist cavalry, but there was simply insufficient time to reorganise.
ALB-12M represents one of the Buffs during this desperate encounter. The regiment had already accumulated considerable Peninsular service, including actions at Oporto and Talavera, before suffering catastrophic losses at Albuera.
Despite the devastation, the regiment was rebuilt with remarkable speed, contributing to the nickname “The Resurrectionists.”
Displayed opposite the ALB lancers and hussars, this figure helps recreate one of the most dramatic and destructive cavalry actions of the entire Peninsular War.
