The precise identity of the Kardakes remains one of the more interesting questions surrounding the armies of the later Achaemenid Persian Empire.

Ancient writers do not describe them consistently. At the Battle of Issus in 333 BC, for example, they appear in sources using terminology associated with different forms of infantry, contributing to modern debate over whether they were heavy troops influenced by Greek hoplites, lighter infantry or a broader military class.
