AP-39YBN – 4 Kardake Infantry | John Jenkins Designs
The armies of the Achaemenid Persian Empire were among the most diverse of the ancient world, drawing soldiers from territories stretching from the eastern Mediterranean to Central Asia and the Indus Valley. Among the more intriguing troops associated with the later Persian army were the Kardakes, whose exact status and battlefield role remain debated by historians.
Ancient sources describe the Kardakes in different ways, including as hoplite-style infantry and lighter peltast-type troops. Rather than representing one narrowly defined troop type, they may have formed a broader class of soldiers capable of serving in several infantry roles.
AP-39YBN brings together four Kardake infantrymen, creating an instant formation for collectors building the Persian forces that confronted the Macedonian armies of Alexander the Great. Their distinctive appearance also helps emphasise the extraordinary variety found within the Achaemenid military system.
The four figures can be displayed as a compact fighting group or combined with the other Kardake releases to create a far more substantial Persian infantry line supported by cavalry and other contingents.
Now available from The Military Workshop – an impressive four-figure John Jenkins Designs set representing the fascinating Kardake infantry of Achaemenid Persia.
