DD304 – The Daimler Mk. II Armoured Car | King & Country
Fast, compact and heavily armed for a reconnaissance vehicle, the Daimler Armoured Car became one of Britain’s most successful armoured car designs of the Second World War. Developed alongside the smaller Daimler Dingo scout car, it gave reconnaissance units a vehicle capable of both finding the enemy and defending itself when contact was made.
The Daimler carried a 2-pounder gun together with a coaxial 7.92mm Besa machine gun, giving it considerably more firepower than a lightly armed scout car. Its speed and manoeuvrability made it well suited to reconnaissance, screening and liaison work, while its ability to travel rapidly in reverse was particularly useful when a patrol needed to disengage quickly.
DD304 represents the later Mk. II version in British olive drab, configured for service in North-West Europe. King & Country produced the vehicle in the markings of 44 Brigade, XXX Corps, representing a formation that fought from Normandy through France and the Netherlands and into Germany. The model also includes an NCO vehicle commander from the 11th Hussars, a regiment closely associated with British armoured reconnaissance.
The real Daimler saw wartime service in North Africa, Europe and the Far East, and late-war reconnaissance troops in North-West Europe could operate Daimlers alongside the smaller Dingo scout cars. That makes DD304 particularly versatile in a diorama – it can be positioned ahead of an advancing armoured column, halted at a roadside junction, passing through a liberated village or operating with infantry and other reconnaissance vehicles.
