GA-45 – Panther Ausf. A #321 | John Jenkins Designs
The Panther combined heavy armour and an exceptionally powerful 7.5cm KwK 42 gun with a design intended to counter the increasingly capable tanks being encountered by German forces during the Second World War.
GA-45 – Panther Ausf. A #321 represents a specific vehicle of I./Panzer Regiment 6, temporarily attached to Panzer Lehr Division during the Normandy campaign of 1944. The battalion had been transferred from the Eastern Front and arrived with newly equipped Panther Ausf. A tanks and a considerable number of combat-experienced personnel.
Following the Allied landings on 6 June 1944, Panzer Lehr moved towards Normandy and became involved in the intense fighting around Caen before later shifting towards the American sector near Saint-Lô. Panther #321 survived several weeks of fighting before being knocked out near St. Gilles on 25 July 1944, during the opening phase of Operation Cobra.
This was a mid-production Panther Ausf. A built by M.A.N., displaying characteristic features including Zimmerit coating and the unusually large red turret number 321, which was also repeated across spare track links attached to the turret sides.
With its historically specific markings and substantial presence, GA-45 makes an impressive centrepiece for a Normandy display alongside German infantry, supporting vehicles and opposing Allied armour.
