GAN-04 - 44th Regiment of Foot | John Jenkins Designs

This 20th Anniversary Limited Edition set represents soldiers of the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot during the Last Stand at Gandamak on 13 January 1842.

The two-piece release depicts part of the desperate final resistance mounted by the surviving British soldiers during General Elphinstone's catastrophic retreat from Kabul in the First Anglo-Afghan War.

After suffering devastating losses during the withdrawal, a small number of survivors reached a snow-covered hillock near Gandamak, where they were surrounded by Afghan tribesmen.

With approximately twenty working muskets remaining and only two shots per weapon, the soldiers refused demands to surrender. Their position was eventually overwhelmed following repeated attacks.

Captain Thomas Alexander Souter survived after the regimental colours wrapped around his body were mistaken for the clothing of a high-ranking officer. He was taken prisoner along with Sergeant Fair and seven privates.

This commemorative release represents positions #10 and #11 on the manufacturer's Gandamak display base.

A limited edition of 250, it complements the other figures recreating the final stand of the 44th Regiment.
