GAN-12 - 44th Regiment of Foot | John Jenkins Designs
This 20th Anniversary Limited Edition release continues the representation of the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot during the Last Stand at Gandamak on 13 January 1842.
The four-piece set represents soldiers involved in one of the most tragic episodes of the First Anglo-Afghan War, when the remnants of General Elphinstone's army were destroyed during the retreat from Kabul.
The surviving British soldiers reached a snowy hillock near the village of Gandamak, where they found themselves surrounded by Afghan tribesmen.
Although severely depleted and almost without ammunition, the remaining troops refused to surrender. Accounts describe a period of sniping followed by successive assaults that eventually overwhelmed the position.
Only a small number survived to be taken prisoner, including Captain Thomas Alexander Souter, who had wrapped the colours of the 44th Regiment around his body.
The set represents positions #8 and #22 on the manufacturer's dedicated Gandamak display base, allowing collectors to continue assembling the complete scene.
Produced as a limited edition of 250, this release forms part of the commemorative series marking the manufacturer's twentieth anniversary.
Now available from The Military Workshop.
