GGNC-01 - Natal Carabineers Officer | John Jenkins Designs

This mounted Natal Carabineers Officer represents a member of the colonial volunteer forces serving during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.

The figure forms part of the Volunteers, Irregulars and Auxiliaries collection and depicts an officer of one of Natal's established mounted volunteer units.

The Natal Carabineers were formed in 1855, with their headquarters located at Pietermaritzburg, the capital of Natal.

The colonial volunteer system had developed in response to concerns about the withdrawal of British regular troops during the Crimean War.

Unlike compulsory militia arrangements, the volunteer corps were organised locally, with members generally providing their own uniforms, horses and saddlery.

The Natal Carabineers wore dark blue uniforms with white detailing. Officers were distinguished by additional black mohair braid arranged across the front of their tunics.

During the Anglo-Zulu War, the regiment served with Lord Chelmsford's central column and participated in the disastrous Battle of Isandlwana in January 1879.

This mounted officer provides an excellent command figure for collectors assembling a Natal Carabineers or colonial volunteer formation.
