GGNC-03 - Natal Carabineers Musician | John Jenkins Designs
This mounted Natal Carabineers Musician represents a member of the colonial volunteer forces serving in Natal during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
The figure belongs to the Volunteers, Irregulars and Auxiliaries collection and provides an important regimental musician for a Natal Carabineers formation.
The Natal Carabineers were established in 1855, forming part of the volunteer military system developed to strengthen the colony's defences.
The regiment was based at Pietermaritzburg and operated as a mounted volunteer force, with members providing their own horses and much of their personal equipment.
The Carabineers wore distinctive dark blue uniforms with white collars and cuffs, together with white helmets.
Musicians were distinguished by uniform decoration, including white braid, which contrasted with the black braid associated with officers.
During the Anglo-Zulu War, the regiment served with Lord Chelmsford's central column and participated in the Battle of Isandlwana.
The regiment suffered significant losses during the engagement, with twenty-three of its members killed.
This musician complements the Natal Carabineers Officer and other mounted volunteer figures, allowing collectors to create a more complete regimental display.
Now available from The Military Workshop.
