GGNV-05 - British Naval Brigade | John Jenkins Designs
This two-piece British Naval Brigade release represents sailors serving with the Eshowe Relief Column during the Battle of Gingindhlovu on 2 April 1879.
The figures belong to the Anglo-Zulu War collection and depict the naval personnel who participated in British military operations during the campaign.
Naval Brigade landing parties were a familiar feature of Victorian military expeditions, with sailors and Royal Marines frequently deployed ashore to support land operations.
Following the British defeat at Isandlwana, HMS Shah was diverted from its return voyage and landed approximately 378 men at Durban.
The British military campaign against the Zulu kingdom continued as Lord Chelmsford assembled a relief force to reach the besieged garrison at Eshowe.
On 2 April 1879, the relief column confronted a large Zulu impi at Gingindhlovu.
British infantry, naval personnel and supporting troops defended an entrenched camp against a series of determined attacks before the Zulu forces withdrew.
This Naval Brigade release provides an excellent addition to a Gingindhlovu battlefield display, particularly when combined with other British regulars, artillery and colonial troops represented in the collection.
