GMP-24MB – Minamoto Retainer | John Jenkins Designs
The Gempei War of 1180–1185 marked a turning point in Japanese history, as the Minamoto Clan emerged victorious over the rival Taira family.
The eventual establishment of the Kamakura shogunate helped place the samurai military class at the centre of Japanese government.
John Jenkins Designs explains that samurai warriors were frequently accompanied by groups of retainers who wore simpler protective equipment.
These soldiers often used do-maru armour, made from treated leather and silk lacing, rather than the more elaborate yoroi worn by the mounted samurai elite.
GMP-24MB – Minamoto Retainer by John Jenkins Designs depicts a warrior wearing green armour and a helmet, together with a blue tunic.
The figure is armed with a naginata, held ready to thrust forward.
Part of the John Jenkins Designs Gempei War collection, this miniature complements the other Minamoto retainers and mounted samurai.
