INCA-01 - Inca Litter | John Jenkins Designs

This impressive Inca Litter set represents the ceremonial and practical means of transportation used by the Sapa Inca, the supreme ruler of the Inca Empire, and other important commanding officers.

The set depicts a litter accompanied by five figures, recreating an important symbol of authority within one of the largest empires of pre-Columbian America.

The Inca Empire developed in the Andean highlands of South America, with its political, administrative and military centre located at Cusco. By the early 16th century, the empire extended across substantial portions of modern Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Colombia.

The Sapa Inca occupied the highest position within Inca society and exercised considerable political, religious and military authority.

Traditionally, the royal litter was carried by specially selected men from Callahuaya on shorter journeys, while longer journeys were undertaken by Lucana tribesmen from the provinces of Lucana and Sora. These men were known as the feet of the Inca and received training for their duties from approximately 20 years of age.

Historical illustrations generally depict four litter bearers, although written accounts describe groups of eight or even twenty men carrying the ruler.

This distinctive set provides a commanding centrepiece for an Inca collection, particularly when displayed alongside the separately available expansion figures, warriors and attendants.
