INCA-01A - Expansion Litter | John Jenkins Designs
This Inca Litter Expansion Set is designed to complement the main Inca Litter, allowing collectors to create a more extensive ceremonial procession representing the ruler and his attendants during the height of the Inca Empire.
The litter was an important symbol of status and authority, traditionally used to transport the Sapa Inca and senior military commanders.
The bearers entrusted with this responsibility occupied a specialised position within Inca society. Men from Callahuaya were traditionally employed for shorter journeys, while longer distances were undertaken by Lucana tribesmen from the provinces of Lucana and Sora.
These individuals were specially trained for their role and were commonly dressed in blue.
Although illustrations often show a litter carried by four men, historical accounts describe larger groups of bearers. Additional crews accompanied important processions to provide relief and ensure that the ruler could continue travelling.
Accounts suggest that several hundred Lucana attendants could accompany the royal litter during major journeys.
During the early stages of the Spanish conquest, the traditional Lucana bearers deserted, and warriors from the Carabaya tribe subsequently assumed the responsibility of carrying the royal litter.
This expansion set offers collectors the opportunity to develop a larger Inca procession, adding further detail to displays featuring the Sapa Inca and the empire's ceremonial traditions.
