INCA-14 - 2 Canari Warriors | John Jenkins Designs

This two-figure set represents Canari Warriors, members of the indigenous communities incorporated into the Inca Empire during its expansion across the Andean region.

The figures are depicted thrusting their spears with both hands, illustrating the distinctive fighting equipment associated with Canari infantry.

The Canari consisted of a loose confederation of largely independent tribes whose warriors were recognised for their distinctive appearance and military traditions.

According to historical descriptions, Canari men generally wore their hair longer than was customary among the Incas, often tying part of it into a knot at the front of the head. They also wore metal ornaments through their ears and noses, earning the nickname Quillacana, meaning metal noses.

Spanish accounts consistently describe Canari soldiers as spearmen. Their characteristic weapon was the Llaca, a spear approximately six to seven feet long, fitted with a point made from bronze, copper, stone or fire-hardened wood.

The spear shafts were frequently decorated with colourful feathers, creating a distinctive appearance.

These two warriors provide an excellent addition to an Inca infantry collection, particularly when displayed alongside other Canari spearmen and warriors from the wider empire.
