JAN-16 - Zihril Nefer | John Jenkins Designs
This Zihril Nefer represents one of the heavily armoured assault soldiers belonging to the elite Janissary corps of the Ottoman Empire during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565.
The figure is depicted charging forward, wearing chain armour and mail trousers while carrying a round shield and raising an axe. The advancing pose captures the aggressive fighting role associated with these specialised Ottoman infantrymen.
The Zihril Nefer were selected from volunteers within the Janissary corps and were responsible for undertaking some of the most dangerous assignments during military campaigns.
Their principal responsibility was to lead assaults against enemy positions, particularly where fortified defences had been damaged or weakened sufficiently to allow an attack.
Because these missions carried a high risk of casualties, the soldiers received double pay. They were also known as Serdengeçi, referring to warriors prepared to risk their lives in the service of the Ottoman Sultan.
The Great Siege of Malta began in May 1565 when Ottoman forces attempted to capture the island from the Knights Hospitaller. The defenders resisted repeated assaults throughout the summer before the Ottoman army withdrew in September.
This charging warrior is particularly suitable for recreating an Ottoman infantry assault and complements the other armoured Zihril Nefer figures in the collection.
