JAN-18 - Ottoman Archers | John Jenkins Designs

This three-figure set depicts Ottoman Archers serving within the military forces of the Ottoman Empire during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565.

The figures are represented wearing white tunics and are shown in three different stages of using their bows. One archer has just released an arrow, another is preparing to fire, while the third is reaching for another arrow.

These contrasting poses provide a realistic representation of an Ottoman archery formation and illustrate the continuing importance of traditional missile weapons during the 16th century.

The Ottoman Empire maintained one of the most formidable military organisations of the period, combining elite Janissary infantry with cavalry, artillery and other supporting troops.

Although firearms were becoming increasingly important, bows and crossbows continued to feature among the weapons employed by Ottoman forces.

Under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, a substantial Ottoman expedition was assembled to capture Malta from the Knights Hospitaller in 1565.

The siege began on 18 May and continued for nearly four months. The island's defenders resisted repeated Ottoman attacks until the invading forces withdrew in September.

This three-figure set provides an excellent addition to an Ottoman army display, particularly when combined with the other Ottoman Archer sets to create a larger formation of missile troops.
