JAN-19 - Ottoman Archers | John Jenkins Designs

This three-figure set represents Ottoman Archers during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, depicting soldiers serving within the military forces of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

The figures wear distinctive light blue tunics and are presented in three complementary poses. One archer has released his arrow, another is ready to fire, while the third reaches for a fresh arrow in preparation for his next shot.

The combination of poses captures different stages of archery and allows the figures to be arranged into a coordinated battlefield formation.

During the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire possessed one of the most powerful armies in the Mediterranean region. Its military forces included disciplined Janissary infantry, cavalry, artillery and troops equipped with traditional missile weapons.

Although firearms were increasingly prominent in Ottoman warfare, the bow continued to serve alongside other weapons within the Sultan's armies.

In May 1565, Ottoman forces launched a major expedition against Malta, then held by the Knights Hospitaller. The campaign developed into a prolonged siege that continued throughout the summer.

Despite repeated assaults, the defenders successfully resisted the Ottoman invasion, with the besieging army eventually withdrawing in September.

These Ottoman Archers are particularly suitable for display alongside the white- and green-tunic variations, providing greater colour and variety when creating larger Ottoman infantry formations.
