JAN-20 - Ottoman Archers | John Jenkins Designs

This three-figure set depicts Ottoman Archers serving during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, representing the missile troops who formed part of the extensive military forces of the Ottoman Empire.

The figures are dressed in green tunics and shown in three different poses associated with the use of their bows. One warrior has just fired, another is preparing to release an arrow, while the third reaches for another arrow.

These different positions illustrate the various stages of archery, allowing collectors to recreate a formation of soldiers engaged in missile combat.

The Ottoman military system of the 16th century incorporated several different types of troops, including elite Janissary infantry, cavalry, artillery and archers.

The Janissaries formed the backbone of the Ottoman army, while other contingents provided additional military capabilities. Traditional weapons such as bows and crossbows continued to be employed even as matchlock firearms became increasingly significant.

In 1565, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent launched an expedition to capture Malta from the Knights Hospitaller.

The siege lasted from 18 May until 11 September, becoming one of the most important military confrontations between the Ottoman Empire and the defenders of Malta.

This three-figure set makes an excellent addition to an Ottoman military collection and can be combined with JAN-18 and JAN-19 to create a larger and more varied archery formation.
